about

PARISHES the solo pandemic project of Taylor Carik (Whiskey Rock ‘n’ Roll Club MPLS, Bronto). Written and recorded mostly in his house during the first year of the pandemic, Taylor combined his love of 90s electro-dance music, funk/R&B beats, and his blues rock background with a modern take on songs about grief, desire, social troubles, and more. He developed all of the tracks—playing all guitars and bass tracks, plus programming all the drum tracks—before layering in additional harmonica and vocal tracks.

Taylor also used the opportunity to work with some of the cool Minneapolis + St. Paul-affiliated musicians that he looks up to: The talent list includes Dean Brewington (of Up Rock + St. Paul hip hop legends Abstract Pack) doing additional vocals, Ben Miller (of the Federales and Chris Thile Live From Here band) bringing his vocal and harmonica prowess, and Liz Draper (who plays with Charlie Parr and now in Low) helping with additional producing to finish the album at Mid City Studio. Taylor also handed off a song, Hong Kong Sun, to Kai Brewster (General B & The Wiz, A Little Too Short To Be Stormtroopers, the4ontheFloor) for a different take, providing a lot of the dark direction of the overall project.

ABOUT ‘BRING ON THE . . . ‘

Bring On The . . . is an album about the social and creative spirit pushing back against lockdowns. The album title comes from the track “Scarabs” with lines like “You pray for the rain to bring on the flood/ You begged then you ran just as fast as you could”, “You prayed for the rain to bring on the feast/ Then washed it away, laid the whole thing to waste” and others. The lines capture both the dismay during the pandemic coupled with a defiance at the many challenges that have now become an everyday reality, as well as a deep longing for the dance party-filled better times. That defiance culminates musically as well. Bring On The . . . is an album for when the dark and cold sets in. The songs capture the gloom of the pandemic and Uprising in Minneapolis and keeps them at bay with the beats of a sweaty back room or basement party.

The project includes a few notable musical elements: Dean Brewington’s backing vocals and Ben Miller’s harmonica playing are both pitched in different ways to layer into the music—Miller taking the demo recordings into different keys, recording his tracks, and pitching down his harmonica before Taylor chopped up the recordings.
